Adjusting temperatures while forming rustless steel sheet metal

The forming of rustless steel sheet metal is faced with special challenges to the forming process. In particular, the strain-induced martensite formation in austenites influences forming behaviour directly and is dependend on temperature and chemical composition.
Besides, there are numerous special requirements to tribology and secondary operations in industrial production processes, like intermediate annealing for example. These problems were proceeded in the completed research cooperation “Heat development in fine sheet metal made of rustless steel” that lasted from Mai 2009 to October 2011. In the prolongation of the research cooperation “Adjusting temperatures while forming rustless steel sheet metal” that has started in November 2011, new aspects are taken up and former ones are consolidated.

Goals of the research cooperation

  • Deeper understanding of rustless material
  • Hints and guidelines for glowing of rustless steel
  • Elaboration of concepts for local tempering of the component with corresponding tool and cooling concepts
  • Guidelines and hints for simulative illustration of serial processes, material behaviour and tool temperings
  • Consideration and comprehensive understanding of the production line regarding influences on temperature and process
  • Realisation and transferability, also shearing processes of rustless steel sheet metal

Investigation priorities of the research cooperation:

  • Material characterisation of rustless stainless steel
  • Simulation of strain-induced martensite formation and thermal processes in the tool
  • Measuring of heat transmission coefficient tool design/tempering concepts
  • Intermediate annealing of rustless stainless steel
